Building Studio were invited to prepare a concept design for a 50m indoor swimming pool at Trinity Grammar’s main campus in Summer Hill that would provide facilities for education, spectators and intramural competition.
Conceived as an underground facility to maximise above ground open space within the School’s campus, the building’s design concept utilised site contours to create a naturally ventilated and light-filled hall, providing optimal swim training and competition conditions. Designed to international standards, the 50m by 20m swimming pool is also divisible into separate competition and training water polo courts with additional space for competitor marshalling and spectator stands.
The pool surface is set approximately 5 metres below natural ground level with a trafficable concrete deck supported by a sculptural concrete beam soffit above. Structurally designed to streamline the construction process, this 35m span deck provides both architectural character and the opportunity of a new junior school playground space above.
The main entrance hall and ancillary changing, education and technical spaces are provided within the buildings 1800m2 footprint. Cross-flow external ventilation and natural light is achieved by a full height glazed wall running along the entire western facade of the building, also providing external courtyard and sky views. On the eastern side, sculptural turrets provide air exhaust to control moisture and humidity within the pool hall.
